The Perfect Size to take on a Ryanair Flight

It’s the set of dimensions that everybody hates, 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. Yes, that’s right, the size that you are permitted to take as a carry-on bag on a Ryanair flight (For a full list of dimensions permitted on other airlines, please see our travel desk). Now that you have booked, you realise you need a new bag or suitcase to take on board with you, because you have to put everything, including the kitchen sink inside. Your handbag, briefcase, laptop, shop purchases, camera etc must all be carried in your one permitted piece of cabin baggage. We realise how difficult it can be to put all of that in just one bag, so we have put together some our favourite cases & bags that are within the Ryanair size limits. We have some fantastic carry on luggage options from Tumi, Samsonite, Bric’s etc.

Flyin’ With Ryan ?

Ryanair carries a lot of passengers and encourages those passengers to carry on luggage as they charge for checking in. The issue you have as a consumer and we have as a retailer is to find trolley cases that adhere to Ryanair’s carry on measurements of 50x45x20cm. Most airlines in the UK work with the more generous proportions up to around 55x45x25cm. The main stumbling block is the 20cm depth of case which has sent many brands scrambling back to the drawing board to re engineer the proportions of their carry on cases. Ryanair are not the only ones – others include Aer Lingus, Air Berlin, Emirates, German Wings, and Swiss Air. For a full list of carry on sizes for individual airlines click here.

Over the coming months we will see many luggage brands bring out more carry on pieces that are Ryanair compatible (always with the caveat that nothing is guaranteed when it comes to airlines and their decision of the day).

In the meantime we asked our staff what they recommend to customers in store. A selection of these can be found on our Ryanair carry on page. There were also some useful comments especially with regards to soft bags. When it comes to soft bags you always have to be careful how much you put in the bag. If it is overstuffed it will often be rejected.

Brand wise, the main brands we have online with Ryanair compatible pieces are Tumi, Rimowa, Samsonite and Brics. In a way, the sure-fire solution is a hardside piece as there is no slack in the material to allow for a change in dimension. Rimowa’s 52 case in various ranges is a great example.

There were some other pieces that our managers suggested which were plainly over the recommended measurements. The answer as to why when questioned was that customers had told them they were ‘getting away’ with carrying on larger pieces or they had seen fellow fliers with the same case. From our point of view we can’t suggest these but if you want to take the risk then by all means do. If you have any failsafe ways of getting a bigger bag onboard with Ryan or others (other than flying first) then let us know.

As more Ryanair pieces become available we will let you know. Happy flying – whoever you travel with
