What's the difference between cabin and hold luggage?

Hold luggage are the larger cases and bags that get checked into the hold of the plane. They remain in the hold for the duration of the flight and are collected from the carousel at your destination airport. There are again restrictions on the weight and size of your hold luggage. Is hard or soft luggage better?
