FAQ's

What is a standard size suitcase?

Suitcases come in all shapes and sizes and airline baggage allowances vary. This isn’t helpful, we know; that’s why we have included a size guide above that outlines the average sizes for suitcases. Whilst you can shop for the most popular sizes of luggage, be it, small, medium or large cases, you will need to make sure you have checked your specific airline baggage allowance before making your purchase.

What's the difference between cabin and hold luggage?

Cabin bags or hand luggage are bags and small suitcases that can be taken onboard with you. All airlines have guidelines for the maximum sized suitcases and bags they allow on the flight. Check out our hand luggage guide for more information.

Hold luggage are the larger cases and bags that get checked into the hold of the plane. They remain in the hold for the duration of the flight and are collected from the carousel at your destination airport. There are again restrictions on the weight and size of your hold luggage. Some airlines include a bag in the cost of your flight, but many short-haul, budget airlines, charge per suitcase.

What size suitcase is hand luggage?

The maximum size for hand luggage is 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, however, hand luggage sizes differ between airlines. Our guide above shows the average hand luggage size. For a little more information, take a look at our hand luggage size guide for more airline specific results.

Is hard or soft luggage better?

It often comes down to preference. Today’s hard-shell or hard sided luggage is made from high-tech plastics such as ABS or polycarbonate, which are both lightweight and durable. They can offer better security as they have built-in security features such as integrated locks and are great at protecting fragile items within your case. They are also more waterproof. Soft suitcases are renowned for being lightweight and easier to pack as they offer more flexibility and more pockets.

What is considered lightweight luggage?

Suitcases and other types of luggage come in many different materials. With tighter airline baggage allowances and often additional costs for luggage, lots of our best-selling brands have developed bags and cases that are very lightweight but still retain the durability to withstand the wear and tear they endure. Although there is no industry standard to classify what is considered lightweight, a fair representation would be as follows: an average, medium suitcase weighs around 5 - 6kg, so everything weighing less can be considered as lightweight. Take a look at the medium suitcases we have, offering the best, lightweight options.

What is the most durable, lightweight luggage?

Our hard-sided suitcases are made from plastics such as ABS and polycarbonate, these are both known for their durability as well as being lightweight. ABS is the lightest, whereas polycarbonate is considered the most durable; a suitcase in either of these materials will offer you exactly what you’re after in terms of a sturdy, reliable case that will see you through years and years of travel.

What are the best suitcases?

With brands such as Samsonite, Tumi, Rimowa and Ted Baker constantly topping the charts, deciding on the best suitcase can often come down to personal choice. Hard-sided cases are considered the best option for durability, soft for flexibility. Samsonite has long been a customer favorite for being hard-wearing and offering value for money, and brands such? as Ted Baker offer the durability as well as unique designs.

What is the best luggage for traveling?

Different suitcases and travel bags, suit different kinds of journeys. If your trip is fairly simple and doesn’t involve you carrying or moving your luggage around too much then a suitcase is ideal. If you are moving from place to place, backpacking, or need to use multiple modes of transport, you might want to consider something you can carry, like a duffle bag or holdall.

What's the best carry-on luggage?

With the ever-increasing fees that airlines are charging for hold-luggage, carry-on bags are becoming more and more popular. With brands such as Samsonite, Rimowa and Ted Baker all offering light-weight options that suit airline specifications, the design is down to personal preference and what you will be packing. You need to consider items such as laptops when you choose your size.

Is Samsonite good luggage?

Leading luggage brand Samsonite remains one of the most popular in the market. It began sales more than 100 years ago, so it’s no wonder their wide range of products are renowned for being extremely durable, effortlessly stylish and offer excellent value-for-money.
